Some Mentoring and Coaching Definitions

Mentoring and coaching can take many different forms.

  • Professional one to one mentoring and executive coaching.
  • One to one mentoring and coaching
  • Managers as Coaches
  • Team mentoring and coaching
  • Peer mentoring groups/Leadership mentoring groups

Professional one to one mentoring and executive coaching.

An individual receives mentoring from a skilled professional outside of the organisation. The organisation (or sometimes the individual) funds regular mentoring meetings or telephone coaching conversations. The NZ Mentoring Centre has a team of highly trained and qualified coaches and mentors based throughout New Zealand. For more details see our Mentoring & Coaching page.

One to one mentoring and coaching in organisations

Volunteers or assigned staff members from within the organisation are trained and provide regular mentoring and coaching for individuals who are not their direct reports. See Mentoring Programmes for more detail.

Managers as coaches

Managers take a coaching approach to performance management by having regular coaching sessions with individuals in addition to (or instead of) their formal performance appraisal discussions.

Team mentoring and coaching

A professional mentor comes and coaches a whole team (and sometimes each of the individuals) to work to their potential and achieve business objectives.

Peer mentoring groups/Leadership mentoring groups

A small group of between 4 - 6 individuals are trained in effective tools for mentoring in groups and mentor each other without the aid of an expert in their midst. They quickly establish high levels of trust and synergy and by using the specifically designed tools, tap in to the inherent knowledge and wisdom that exists within the group. It is a cost effective method to enable emerging leaders to make leaps and bounds in individual, professional and organisational learning.
