Professional Mentoring and Workplace Coaching Skills
Professional Mentoring and Workplace Coaching Skills is a five day course for people who want to move in to significant mentoring, coaching or supervision roles within their organisation or for those who are building their own practice.
It provides participants with a thorough understanding of the mentoring, coaching and supervision processes and in depth training on specific tools to use within mentoring conversations with clients. All those who successfully compete the course will receive a Unitec Institute of Technology certificate.
Course Objectives
This course enables participants to:
- Define mentoring, coaching and supervision – purposes and functions, roles and limits and boundaries to the role.
- Create positive coaching environments.
- Avoid the 8 most common pitfalls when mentoring or supervising
- Use intentional and skilful questioning when coaching
- Use reflective listening to deepen rapport and facilitate reflection
- Use feedback effectively in the mentoring process
- Negotiate a contract with a client
- Use a range of structured tools to facilitate learning and reflection
- Use creative approaches to mentoring to facilitate insight and understanding.
- Discuss ethical issues for mentors, coaches and supervisors
- Demonstrate consistently the personal skills and attributes of a competent mentor/coach
- Explore a range of models for coaching and supervision
- Manage a mentoring, coaching or supervision session with a client
- Identify their own learning style and that of their clients
Live practice is an important component of the learning process and a supportive training environment is created to ensure that participants have a positive and constructive introduction to this powerful professional development process. There is some reading required and work based tasks between sessions. Demonstrations and evaluation of practice ensure that the theory comes to life that there are plenty of opportunites for discussion of practice.
Course Requirements
80% attendance requirement and assessment will involve reflective activities and delivering and evaluating live mentoring/supervision sessions with clients and peers. There will be required readings associated with this course.
